Why I Have my Toddlers Do Chores

My 1 and 3 year olds Do Chores… And (we)LOVE it.

Anyone who knows us, knows my 1 and 3 year old take turns vacuuming, and washing the couch. They also wash windows! My 3 year old daughter helps cook, fold laundry and put it away, and wash counters and tables! They both take trash to the trash, and pick things up off the floor.

They actually fight over it! A blessing and a curse hahaha

But WHY do I want my tiny kids to do chores?

Am I lazy?

Child labor?

Nope. None of those things!

Here are my reasons why!

1. It will help them become productive members of society.
They will know how to take care of themselves, and others! And they will learn skills most kids just aren’t learning these days.

2. It will teach them Obedience.
Another problem I see today is kids lack respect and obedience. My kids will not be able to be that way. We are teaching them from a young young age how important Obedience is. My daughter asks “Whyyyyyy?’ all the time. I tell her, once you do what I ask you to do.. then you may ask why. So it is slowly turning to… “Ok, may I ask why?” That lets her explore her curiosity… while still listening. Which in turn, makes us both happy.

3. It will teach them Responsibility.
Letting them help with the family chores will make them responsible! Knowing they are expected to help, especially when it is their mess, will help them to develop a sense of pride in their work.. and eventually will make them less messy.
“Why would I make that mess… If I have to clean it up?”

4. It helps me! So I can focus on other things like cleaning the bathroom, keeping them alive and doing the dishes.
This is a little selfish but hey… when I do it all, I have less time playing with them! When I don’t do it all, and I don’t have them help… I play but our house is gross hahahaha. So this, (not necessarily right now because I still have to supervise), will make it so much easier for us all to get things done! Sharing the home, Sharing the load 🙂
